A good mosquito net does three things at once: it keeps biting insects off you while you sleep, it cools the bedroom by adding a layer of breathable fabric overhead, and — if you choose well — it transforms the look of the room. A bad mosquito net does none of these things and ends up in landfill within a season.

This guide is the one we wish more people read before they bought. It covers every fabric, every style, every size, how to install a net properly, how to look after it, and how to choose the right one for your situation — whether you live in Florida, you’re heading to Costa Rica, or you’re outfitting a tropical resort.

It’s a long read. If you want the short version: cotton nets last decades and breathe beautifully, polyester nets give you the tightest weave and the easiest care, and silk nets are the most beautiful object you’ll ever hang over a bed. Now, the detail.

Why a Mosquito Net Still Beats Every Other Option

Screens fail when doors open. Repellents wear off. Plug-in vaporisers only work in sealed rooms and many people would rather not breathe chemicals all night. A mosquito net works by simple physics — a barrier the insect cannot cross — and it works whether the power is on, whether the windows are open, whether you’re camping, indoors, or sleeping on a verandah in Antigua.

Mosquito nets also protect against insects that repellents barely touch. A correctly woven net stops them at the fabric.

And nets do more than block insects. A well-hung canopy reduces overhead light, softens sound, and creates a separate microclimate around the bed — cooler in summer, marginally warmer in winter. Resorts use them because they look beautiful. Families use them because they work.

The Three Fabrics — Cotton, Polyester, and Silk

Fabric is the single most important choice you’ll make. It determines what the net protects against, how it feels, how long it lasts, and how it looks in your room. We make nets in three fabrics, and we have specific reasons for each.

Cotton — The Specialist’s Choice

Our cotton nets are woven at 256 holes per square inch. That’s a finer mesh than most commercially available cotton nets and it’s deliberate — it’s the weave we settled on after testing dozens. The cotton is 100% natural, machine washable, and uses a run-proof weave that won’t ladder if a thread snags.

Cotton has one property no synthetic fibre can replicate: tiny fibrous hairs along each thread. Mosquitoes can sometimes find their way through synthetic weaves by probing — they can’t probe cotton in the same way because those fibres physically deter them. This is also why cotton nets are the only nets that genuinely deter midges and sandflies, which are small enough to walk through some polyester weaves.

Cotton breathes. In a humid climate — Florida, the Gulf Coast, Queensland, anywhere tropical — that matters more than people realise. A cotton net feels cooler under than polyester, and it doesn’t trap moisture.

If you want a net that lasts decades, looks beautiful, washes clean, and protects against the widest range of insects, choose cotton.

Browse our full cotton range: Cotton Mosquito Nets.

Polyester — The Tight-Weave Workhorse

Our polyester nets are woven at 360 holes per square inch — the tightest weave we produce. Polyester is the right answer when your priority is the absolute smallest hole size and the easiest possible care. It washes easily, dries quickly, doesn’t crease, and resists humidity without going limp.

Polyester nets are slightly less breathable than cotton, but the trade-off is a weave so tight that even very small mosquitoes can’t pass through. For most American homes — where the main concern is mosquitoes specifically — polyester is an excellent choice.

Polyester also takes colour well, holds shape, and is the practical pick for families with children where the net will be washed often and stands up to heavy use.

Browse our full polyester range: Polyester Mosquito Nets.

Silk — The Bed Canopy You Inherit

Our silk canopies are made from pure mulberry silk. The drapes are 8 momme georgette gauze, which is light and translucent and moves with the air, and 16 momme satin fabric for all hems and trims. These items ship from Australia.

A silk canopy isn’t really a mosquito net — it’s a bed canopy that happens to be made of mosquito-resistant fabric. People buy them because they’re stunning. The fact that they also block insects is a bonus.

If you’ve ever looked at the bed canopies appearing in Homes & Gardens or Country & Town House interior features over the last two years and wondered where to get one, this is it. Silk canopies are the centrepiece of a bedroom — and they last because real silk, looked after properly, is a multi-decade fabric.

Which Fabric Is Right for You?

For most American homes worried about mosquitoes specifically — polyester. For families in the South, Gulf Coast or anywhere with midges, sandflies, or no-see-ums — cotton. For luxury, longevity, and a bedroom that looks like a magazine — silk.

We’ve written a deeper comparison if you want the full breakdown: Cotton vs Polyester vs Silk Mosquito Nets.

The Four Styles — Box, Round, Temple, and Pop-Up Freestanding

Shape matters almost as much as fabric. The right shape depends on your bed, your ceiling, and how much room around the bed you want to keep clear.

Box — Maximum Space, Four Hanging Points

A box net is a rectangular frame of fabric that hangs from four points — usually four ceiling hooks placed in a rectangle slightly larger than the bed. The fabric drops down on all four sides, giving you a vertical wall of mesh around the bed.

Box nets are the practical choice for people who want maximum usable space inside the net — you can sit up, read, and move around without the fabric pressing in. They’re the standard format for resorts and for couples sharing a bed because there’s no central pinch point.

Browse box nets: Box Mosquito Nets.

Round — One Hook, Classic Drape

A round net hangs from a single hook in the ceiling and drops in a circle around the bed. It’s the simplest installation — one hook, one net, ten minutes — and it’s the shape most people picture when they think of a mosquito net.

Round nets work beautifully over single, queen and king beds. They give a softer, more romantic look than a box net and they’re the easiest to take down and store seasonally.

See more: Round Mosquito Nets, or read our explainer on box vs round nets.

Temple — Three Openings, Distinctive Profile

Temple nets are a blend of the box shape and the round with a stepped, pagoda-style top and typically three entrance openings. They have a more architectural look than a standard box and they’re often the design chosen for guest rooms and master bedrooms where the net itself is part of the decor.

The openings mean two people can get in and out from either side without disturbing the net’s hang.

Pop-Up Freestanding — No Hooks, No Ceiling

Sometimes you can’t put a hook in the ceiling. Renters, travellers, people staying in hotels, families who want a portable solution for the kids’ beds — the pop-up freestanding net was made for you.

It’s a self-supporting structure that sits over the bed like a tent. No hardware, no installation, no holes in the ceiling.

See the range: Pop-Up Freestanding Mosquito Net.

Sizing — Match the Net to the Bed

A mosquito net needs to be larger than the bed it covers. The fabric should reach the floor or close to it on every side — gaps at floor level let insects in. We make nets in six sizes, matched to standard US and international bed dimensions.

Twin / Single — for single beds and standard twin beds; ideal for kids’ rooms and guest beds.

Double / Full — for the standard double bed; the right size for older children and single adults who want more room.

Queen — the most popular size in the United States; fits queen beds with generous side drape.

King / Cal King — sized for standard king and California king beds; the difference is in the proportions.

Super King — for oversized king beds and larger custom frames.

Crib / Baby — sized specifically for cribs and bassinets, with safe attachment options for nurseries.

If you’re between sizes, always size up. A slightly oversized net drapes more elegantly and seals better at floor level than a tight one. If you have a custom bed or aren’t sure which size fits, send us the bed dimensions and we’ll tell you.

Installation — Getting It Right the First Time

Most mosquito net installations take under an hour. The most important decisions happen before you open the packet: where the hooks go, what type of fixings you use, and how high the ceiling is.

Ceiling Hooks

For a round or temple net you need one hook directly above the centre of the bed. For a box shaped net you need four to six hooks arranged in a rectangle slightly larger than the bed. The fabric should hang clear of the mattress so it doesn’t press against sleepers.

For drywall ceilings, use toggle bolts or proper drywall anchors rated for at least 15 pounds. For wooden joists, simple screw hooks are fine — find the joist with a stud finder first. For concrete or masonry ceilings, you’ll need masonry anchors or rawl plugs and a hammer drill.

The whole hanging assembly only needs to support the weight of the net itself plus a small safety margin — a few pounds, not dozens — but you want it secure enough that pulling the net tight to tuck it under the mattress doesn’t dislodge anything.

We’ve written a full step-by-step installation guide: How to Hang a Mosquito Net from the Ceiling — Complete Guide. This is an in-depth article and worth reading.

High Ceilings

If your ceiling is more than eight or nine feet high just extend the length of cord you use until the correct height is reached.

Renters and Travel

If you can’t drill into the ceiling — or you simply don’t want to — choose the pop-up freestanding format. It’s self-supporting and doesn’t touch the ceiling at all.

Care and Longevity — Why These Nets Aren’t Disposable

Most mosquito nets sold today are disposable. Thin polyester, glued seams, weak hanging loops, and a lifespan measured in seasons rather than decades. We have a different philosophy — we believe a mosquito net should be an item you buy once and keep for a decade.

That requires both the right product and the right care.

Washing

Cotton and polyester nets are machine washable on a gentle cycle in cold or warm water. Use a mild detergent — nothing with bleach, nothing with fabric softener. Fabric softener coats the fibres and reduces the breathability of cotton.

Hang the net to dry rather than putting it in the dryer. It dries quickly because the mesh is open. A dryer will cause the loose weave netting to shrink and once this happens it will never be able to be stretched back into shape. Avoid direct sunlight for long periods, especially with silk as it can become discoloured and brittle.

Silk should be dry cleaned or hand washed in cool water with a silk-safe detergent. It’s not difficult — silk has been washed by hand for thousands of years and it’s worth doing properly.

Storage

When a net comes down for the off-season, fold it loosely and store it somewhere dry. Vacuum-packing isn’t necessary and isn’t ideal for cotton. Fold and repack into the zippered bag it was supplied in.

Repairs

Small holes or pulled threads can be repaired with a needle and matching thread — our run-proof cotton weave makes this straightforward. A net you can repair is a net you keep for decades.

Resort and Luxury Use — Who Buys Our Nets in Bulk

The clearest indicator of a good mosquito net is who chooses to hang one over their paying guests’ beds. Resorts can’t afford a product that fails — a single complaint about bites costs them more than the net cost in the first place.

Resorts and lodges we currently supply, all of whom have given permission to be named, include:

Choosing the Right Mosquito Net — A Quick Framework

Work through these four questions in order:

What insects am I trying to block? Mosquitoes only — polyester is fine. Sandflies, midges or no-see-ums — choose cotton.

Can I install ceiling hooks? Yes — choose box, round or temple. No — choose pop-up freestanding.

What’s the room style? Practical bedroom — polyester. Statement bedroom — cotton or magazine style — silk.

What size is the bed? Match to the closest size and round up if uncertain.

That’s it. Four questions and you have the right net.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do mosquito nets really work?

Yes — when correctly sized and properly installed. A mosquito net is a physical barrier, not a chemical one, so its effectiveness depends entirely on the integrity of the barrier. Make sure the net reaches the floor or tucks under the mattress on all sides, with no gaps where it meets the bed.

What’s the difference between cotton and polyester mosquito nets?

Cotton nets are woven at 256 holes per square inch from natural fibres, breathe better, and uniquely deter most midges and sandflies due to tiny fibrous hairs along each thread. Polyester nets are woven tighter — 360 holes per square inch — and are easier to wash and faster to dry, but slightly less breathable.

Will a mosquito net stop sandflies and midges?

Standard polyester nets may not stop the smallest midges (no-see-ums) and sandflies. Cotton nets stop most of them because the fibrous nature of cotton fibres physically deters these very small insects in a way synthetic weaves can’t. If you live in or travel to areas with midges or sandflies, choose cotton.

Can I use a mosquito net if I rent and can’t drill into the ceiling?

Yes — choose a pop-up freestanding mosquito net. It’s a self-supporting structure that sits over the bed without any ceiling fixings.

How long does a good mosquito net last?

A properly made cotton or silk net should last a decade or more with reasonable care. Polyester nets last a decade or longer. The cheap disposable nets sold on Amazon and elsewhere typically last one or two seasons — they’re not the same product.

How do I wash a mosquito net?

Cotton and polyester nets can be machine washed on a gentle cycle in cool water with mild detergent — no bleach, no fabric softener. Hang to dry rather than tumble drying. Silk nets should be hand washed or dry cleaned.

What size mosquito net do I need?

Match the net size to your mattress size: Twin/Single, Double/Full, Queen, King/Cal King, Super King, or Crib for cribs and bassinets. When between sizes, always size up — a slightly larger net drapes better and seals more effectively at floor level.

Are mosquito nets safe for babies and children?

Yes, and we make a dedicated Crib/Baby size with safe attachment for nurseries. Mosquito nets are one of the safest forms of insect protection for infants because they involve no chemicals, no electricity, and no contact with the skin.

Do you ship to the United States?

Yes. We ship free throughout the mainland USA from our warehouse in North Carolina. Silk canopies ship from our Australian workshop.

Why aren’t you on Amazon?

Deliberately. We sell direct so we can provide expert advice, stand behind every product, and keep prices fair without paying Amazon’s marketplace fees. Twenty-six years specialising in one product means we’d rather talk to our customers ourselves.

Playaviva Resort — Sustainable boutique hotel, Zihuatanejo, Mexico

Choosing a mosquito net sounds simple — until you realise there are three completely different fabrics to choose from, each with its own feel, performance, and price point. After 20 years of making and selling mosquito nets, we've helped thousands of customers find the right match. This guide cuts through the confusion so you can choose with confidence.

Here's what you need to know about cotton, polyester, and silk mosquito nets — and which one is right for your situation.

Polyester Mosquito Nets — The Practical Workhorse

If you need reliable, no-fuss insect protection at a reasonable price, polyester is your answer. Our polyester nets are made from a fine, sheer weave with 360 holes per inch — tight enough to keep out mosquitoes and other biting insects, while still allowing good airflow.

Best for:

Everyday home use in insect-prone areas

Travel — our lightweight polyester Travel net packs into a small carry bag

Budget-conscious buyers who want quality without the premium price tag

Rental properties, holiday homes, or spare bedrooms

Our polyester nets are machine washable, fully hemmed, and built to last. They're available in every bed size from Single through to Super King, and in both round and box shapes.

Price range: US$40 – US$140 depending on size and style.

Cotton Mosquito Nets — The Natural Choice

Cotton mosquito nets are for those who want something more than just insect protection. Our 100% natural cotton nets are breathable, soft to the touch, and beautiful in a way that polyester simply cannot match. If you run hot at night, a cotton net makes a noticeable difference — natural fibres breathe with you rather than trapping heat.

We've supplied cotton mosquito nets to luxury eco-resorts around the world — including Playa Viva in Mexico — where aesthetics matter as much as function. A cotton net looks at home in a beautifully decorated bedroom in a way that a polyester net never quite achieves.

Best for:

Warm climates where breathability matters

Those who prefer natural, organic materials

Master bedrooms where appearance counts

Eco-conscious buyers looking for a sustainable option

Luxury resorts and boutique accommodation

The ultimate bedroom statement piece

Five star resorts and high end accommodation

Frequently Asked Questions

Which mosquito net fabric is best for hot climates?

Cotton is the best choice for hot, humid climates. Natural cotton fibres breathe freely, allowing air to circulate and keeping you cooler than synthetic polyester netting. If you live in Florida, the Gulf Coast, the Southeast or any tropical region, cotton is the recommended choice.

Is cotton or polyester mosquito netting finer?

Polyester netting is finer with 360 holes per square inch compared to cotton which has 256 holes per square inch. However cotton has a unique advantage — natural cotton fibres have tiny microscopic hairs that protrude into the holes of the netting, which deter midges and sandflies even more effectively than the hole count alone suggests.

Can you wash a silk mosquito net?

Our silk mosquito net canopies are dry clean only. Cotton and polyester mosquito nets are all machine washable on a gentle cold cycle. Dry in shade.

What is the most affordable mosquito net fabric?

Polyester is the most affordable option, starting from around $40 for a travel net. Cotton nets start from around $99. Silk canopies start from $525. All fabrics are available in multiple styles and bed sizes.

Are cotton mosquito nets machine washable?

Yes — all our cotton mosquito nets are machine washable on a gentle cold cycle. This is something many competitors cannot offer — hand wash only is common with cotton nets elsewhere. Our machine washable cotton is a genuine practical advantage.

What is the most luxurious mosquito net?

Our pure mulberry silk bed canopies are the most luxurious mosquito nets available anywhere in the world. Made from 8 momme silk georgette with 16 momme silk satin ceilings and hems, they transform any bedroom into an extraordinary five star experience.

Do polyester mosquito nets look see-through?

Yes — polyester mosquito netting is sheer and see-through, giving a light airy appearance. Cotton netting has more body and opacity — it looks more substantial. Silk georgette has an ethereal translucency that catches the light beautifully.

Hanging a mosquito net from the ceiling is much simpler than most people expect. Once you've done it once, the whole process takes about ten minutes — and the result is a beautiful, functional bed canopy that you'll wonder how you ever slept without. This guide covers everything you need to know, from choosing the right hook through to getting your net hanging perfectly straight and looking its best.

What You'll Need

One ceiling hook — for round nets and temple nets. Four or six ceiling hooks — for box nets, one at each corner of the bed and the other two midway along the length.

A drill and drill bit — sized to match your hook or rawlplug.

A toggle hook — specifically designed for drywall or plaster cavity ceilings.

A rawlplug — also called a wall anchor or drywall anchor. Essential if you're drilling into concrete.

Cord, string, rope, chain or fishing line — to connect the hook to the top of your net.

A tape measure — to find the centre point above your bed for round nets, or the four corner positions for box nets.

A stepladder — unless you have very high ceilings and very long arms!

Step 1 — Find the Right Position

For Round and Temple Nets — One Central Hook

For a round or temple mosquito net you need a single hook positioned directly above the centre of your bed. Measure the width of your bed and divide by two — this gives you the centre point from the side. Measure the length of your bed and divide by two — this gives you the centre point from the head or foot. Mark this point on the ceiling with a small pencil mark. You can also stand in the middle of your mattress and look up!

The hook should be positioned so the net hangs with equal drape on all sides of the bed. Use line between the fabric tie on the ceiling of the mosquito net and the ceiling hook as this will allow adjustments for height and level.

For Box Nets — Four or Six Hooks

Box nets hang from four corner points — one above each corner of the bed. Measure and mark each corner position on the ceiling, making sure the four points form a rectangle that matches the dimensions of your bed exactly. This ensures the box net hangs with straight, vertical walls on each side.

If using a suspended frame four hooks will be sufficient — however if suspending the box net without a frame, use six or eight hooks so that the ceiling of the mosquito net can be horizontal and the overlapping openings close properly.

Step 2 — Check What's in Your Ceiling

Before drilling, it's important to know what you're drilling into. Most US homes have one of two ceiling types:

Drywall or plaster over timber joists — the most common. Use a stud finder to locate the nearest timber joist. Drilling directly into a joist gives the strongest fixing. If you can't hit a joist, use a drywall toggle hook anchor.

Concrete or solid ceiling — less common in residential homes. Use a masonry drill bit and a masonry rawlplug.

Important safety note: Always check for electrical cables or pipes before drilling. Use a cable detector — available inexpensively from any hardware store — to scan the area before you start. Never drill without checking first.

Step 3 — Install the Hook

Once you've found your position and checked for cables:

If drilling into a timber joist: Drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than your hook diameter. Screw the hook in firmly by hand — no rawlplug needed when going into solid timber.

If drilling into drywall without a joist: Drill a hole sized to match your drywall anchor. Push the anchor into the hole until flush with the ceiling. Screw the hook into the anchor. Choose one rated for at least 10 lbs.

How strong does the hook need to be? Our mosquito nets weigh between 1 and 4 lbs depending on style and fabric. Any standard ceiling hook rated for 10 lbs or more will be more than sufficient.

Step 4 — Hang the Net

Round and Temple Nets

All our round and temple nets have a fabric loop that connects to the ceiling hook. Simply tie the cord or line to the ceiling hook and then loop through the fabric ties and adjust for height. We do not recommend placing the fabric loop directly onto the ceiling hook as it doesn't allow for height or horizontal level adjustments.

Adjust the length of cord so the net hangs at the height you prefer. A longer cord raises the net higher, giving a more dramatic canopy effect. Once hung, spread the net evenly around the bed and tuck the base under the mattress on all sides for complete insect protection.

Some people are looking for a decorative style — if so, suspend the round net towards the head of the bed so that the fabric drapes attractively around the bed head.

Box Nets

Box nets have pairs of ties that can be attached with line to the four ceiling hooks. Attach each corner in turn, adjusting the cord length at each corner until the net hangs level with straight vertical walls. Step back and check all four sides — adjust as needed until the box shape is perfectly level.

Step 5 — Final Adjustments

Once your net is hanging, take a few minutes to make these final checks:

Is it level? Stand at the foot of the bed and check that the net hangs evenly on both sides. Adjust cord lengths if needed.

Are there any gaps? Check that the base of the net meets the mattress surface on all sides with no gaps where insects could enter.

Does it touch the sleeper? Ideally the sides of the net should not touch you while sleeping. If the net is too close, raise the hook slightly or use a longer cord.

Does it look beautiful? Step back and enjoy the transformation! A well-hung mosquito net is one of the most striking bedroom accessories you can add to any room.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of hook do I need to hang a mosquito net from the ceiling?

For timber joists use a standard screw-in ceiling hook — no anchor needed. For drywall without a joist use a toggle hook anchor rated for at least 10 lbs. For concrete ceilings use a masonry drill bit and rawlplug. Our mosquito nets weigh between 1 and 4 lbs so any standard hook rated for 10 lbs or more is more than sufficient.

How do I find the centre of my bed for hanging a round mosquito net?

Measure the width of your bed and divide by two — this gives the centre point from the side. Measure the length and divide by two — this gives the centre from head or foot. Mark the ceiling at that point. Alternatively stand in the middle of your mattress and look directly up — that's your hook position.

Can I hang a mosquito net without drilling into the ceiling?

Yes — our pop up freestanding mosquito net requires absolutely no ceiling installation. It stands completely independently over your bed with no hooks, no drilling and no ceiling contact at all. Perfect for renters, apartment dwellers or anyone who doesn't want to put holes in the ceiling.

How high should a mosquito net hang from the ceiling?

Use cord or line between the ceiling hook and the fabric tie on top of the net to allow height adjustment. The net should hang high enough that the sides drape generously around the bed without touching the sleeper. For round nets the hook should ideally be 12-18 inches above mattress height. Adjust until it looks and feels right.

How do I stop a mosquito net from touching me while sleeping?

Raise the ceiling hook slightly or use a longer cord to lift the net higher — this allows it to spread more widely around the bed. For round nets our Jumbo size provides the most generous interior space. For box nets ensure all four corners are evenly tensioned so the walls hang straight and vertical.

Is it safe to drill into a ceiling to hang a mosquito net?

Yes — provided you check for electrical cables and pipes before drilling. Use a cable detector available from any hardware store to scan the area before you start. Never drill without checking first. The actual drilling is straightforward — a standard ceiling hook installation takes about five minutes.

How many hooks do I need to hang a box mosquito net?

Four to six hooks — one above each corner of the bed, and optionally two additional hooks midway along the length for a more structured hang. Mark each position carefully so the hooks form a rectangle matching your bed dimensions exactly. This ensures the net hangs with straight vertical walls on all sides.

Can I hang a mosquito net on a four poster bed?

Yes — our box nets can be tied directly to four poster bed frames using the corner ties. Watch our installation videos for step by step guides on tying and pinning mosquito nets to four poster beds. No ceiling hooks needed when using a bed frame.

Box vs Round Mosquito Nets — What's the Difference?

You've decided you want a mosquito net. Now comes the question that stumps almost every first-time buyer — should I get a box net or a round net? They look completely different, they install differently, and they create a very different effect in your bedroom. After 25 years of helping customers choose the right net, we can tell you that this decision is actually quite straightforward once you understand what each style does.

Here's everything you need to know.

What Is a Round Mosquito Net?

A round mosquito net — sometimes called a conical or classic mosquito net — hangs from a single point in the ceiling above the centre of your bed. The netting cascades down in a soft, flowing circle around the bed, creating a romantic, dreamy canopy effect.

Installation couldn't be simpler. You need just one ceiling hook positioned above the centre of your bed, and a short length of cord connecting the hook to the loop at the top of the net. Up in minutes, no tools required.

Round nets are best for:

Those who love the classic, romantic princess canopy effect

Renters or anyone who wants minimal ceiling impact — just one small hook

Simpler installation with fewer ceiling points

Beds where you sleep alone or as a couple who don't need four separate openings

Travellers — our lightweight polyester round net packs into a small stuff bag

Round nets are available in polyester, cotton and pure silk.

What Is a Box Mosquito Net?

A box mosquito net has a structured rectangular shape that creates a clean, architectural canopy over your bed — think of it as the four poster bed effect, without needing a four poster bed. The net hangs from four corner points in the ceiling, creating straight walls on each side of the bed.

Box nets have four separate openings — one on each side of the bed — each with a generous overlapping hem that falls closed naturally to keep insects out. This means both people in a couple can enter and exit from their own side without disturbing the other.

Box nets are best for:

Those who want the four poster bed canopy effect

Couples — four openings means each person can enter from their own side

Maximum insect protection — four fully hemmed openings with generous overlaps

Larger beds where you want complete structured coverage

Master bedrooms where visual impact matters — nothing transforms a room like a box net

Box nets are available in polyester, cotton and pure silk.

Box vs Round — The Key Differences at a Glance

Installation: Round nets need one ceiling hook. Box nets need four corner points. Round nets are quicker and simpler to install.

Appearance: Round nets create a soft, flowing romantic canopy. Box nets create a structured four poster bed canopy effect with clean straight lines.

Openings: Round nets typically have one or two openings. Box nets have four — one on each side of the bed.

Interior space: Box nets provide more usable interior space with vertical walls that don't touch the sleeper. Round nets drape in a circle and can touch shoulders or arms in the centre.

Size flexibility: Round nets can fit multiple bed sizes since they drape from a single central point. Box nets are sized specifically for each bed size.

Travel: Round nets are better for travel — particularly our lightweight polyester version that packs into a small stuff bag.

So Which Should You Choose?

Choose a round net if you want the simplest installation, love the romantic flowing canopy aesthetic, sleep alone or as a couple who don't mind sharing one or two openings, or need something for travel.

Choose a box net if you want the four poster bed canopy effect, need four separate openings for a couple, want maximum interior space and structured coverage, or are buying for a master bedroom where visual impact is important.

The honest truth? Both styles look beautiful. Both provide complete insect protection. The choice really comes down to the look you prefer and how you want to install it.

Don't Forget — Fabric Matters Too

Once you've chosen your shape, you'll need to decide on fabric — polyester, cotton or silk. Each has different characteristics and price points. We cover this in detail in our guide: Cotton vs Polyester vs Silk — Which Mosquito Net is Right for You?

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better — a box or round mosquito net?

Neither is better — they suit different needs. A box net is better for couples, larger beds and those who want the four poster bed canopy effect with maximum interior space. A round net is better for solo sleepers, renters who want minimal ceiling impact, and those who prefer the romantic flowing princess canopy aesthetic.

How many ceiling hooks does a box mosquito net need?

A box mosquito net typically uses four to six ceiling hooks — one above each corner of the bed and optionally two additional hooks midway along the length for a more structured hang. A round net needs just one ceiling hook directly above the centre of the bed.

Can a round mosquito net fit a King size bed?

Yes — our Jumbo round mosquito net is specifically sized to fit King, Queen and California King beds. The generous dimensions ensure complete coverage with comfortable interior space even on larger beds.

Are box mosquito nets better for couples?

Yes — box nets have four separate openings, one on each side of the bed. Each person can enter and exit from their own side without disturbing the other. This makes box nets the preferred choice for couples sharing a bed.

What is a conical mosquito net?

A conical mosquito net is another name for a round mosquito net — named after its cone shape when hanging. It suspends from a single ceiling point and drapes down in a circle around the bed, creating the classic romantic canopy effect seen in tropical resorts worldwide.

Can a box mosquito net be used as a bed canopy?

Absolutely — our box mosquito nets create a stunning four poster bed canopy effect without needing a four poster bed. Many customers buy them primarily for their decorative impact and consider the insect protection an added bonus.

Which mosquito net style is easiest to install?

Round nets are the easiest to install — just one ceiling hook above the centre of the bed. Box nets require four to six ceiling hooks positioned above the corners of the bed. Our pop up freestanding net is the easiest of all — no ceiling installation required whatsoever.
