Choosing a mosquito net

Looking for a mosquito net? We make premium nets in three fabrics — cotton, polyester and pure mulberry silk — and four styles — box, round, temple and freestanding pop-up — for every bed size from Single to Super King. Cotton is our most popular for everyday use, polyester is the practical and affordable choice, and silk is a decorative luxury canopy. Used properly, every net gives complete protection from mosquitoes. We've been making them for thirty years and ship free across mainland USA.

That experience — three decades supplying homes and luxury eco-resorts in some of the most insect-heavy parts of the world — is why we don't sell cheap, disposable nets, and why we've never sold on Amazon. When you buy from us, you buy directly from the specialists.

Choosing by fabric

Most people choose by climate, budget and how they want the bedroom to look. Here's the quick comparison, with detail below.

Fabric Best for Good to know
Cotton Everyday use, warm and humid climates, a natural look 256 holes/sq inch · breathable · machine washable · lasts around a decade
Polyester Practical, affordable, see-through; guest rooms and travel 360 holes/sq inch · sheer · lightweight · easy-care
Silk A decorative luxury canopy and statement bedrooms Pure mulberry silk · floating drape · a feature more than protection

Cotton — natural, breathable, our most popular

Our cotton netting is woven to 256 holes per square inch from natural cotton, with no synthetic blends. It's fine enough to keep mosquitoes out while staying soft and breathable, so it feels cooler on warm, humid nights than synthetic netting. The weave is run-proof — it won't ladder or break down in the wash — and the whole net is machine washable: a gentle cold cycle, dried in shade, never tumble-dried, as heat shrinks cotton permanently. Cared for that way, a cotton net lasts around a decade; our resort clients use theirs daily for years.

One thing cotton owners mention again and again: in midge- and sandfly-prone regions, they find cotton seems to discourage those tiny biting insects better than smoother netting — we believe because of the microscopic fibrous hairs in natural cotton thread. This is drawn from thirty years of our own and our customers' experience, not laboratory testing — but it's the feedback we regularly receive. Shop cotton mosquito nets.

Silk — the luxury choice

Our silk bed canopies are pure mulberry silk: gossamer-fine georgette curtains that float in the breeze, with silk satin hems that give them weight and a beautiful display. This is the fabric you'll see framing four-poster beds in luxury and exclusive homes — chosen when the canopy is a feature, and not really for protection. Explore our pure silk bed canopies, or browse the wider decorative bed-canopy range.

Polyester — practical, sheer, affordable

Polyester is the most accessible choice and the easiest to live with. Woven to 360 holes per square inch, it's sheer enough to see through — some people prefer that open, airy feel — and it's light, quick to wash and ideal for guest rooms, children's rooms and travel. Shop polyester mosquito nets.

Choosing by style

We make four shapes, and most double as a decorative bed canopy as well as insect protection.

  • Box — the structured rectangular shape, with four openings for complete enclosure. It needs at least four points of attachment and can hang from the ceiling, a frame, or a four-poster. Available for every size from Single through to Super King. See box nets.
  • Round — the classic look, suspended from a single ceiling point for a soft, romantic drape. Roomy inside and simple to hang. See round nets.
  • Temple — our most versatile. One size fits beds from Twin through to King, plus daybeds, with three openings for easy access. You'll find it alongside our round nets, as both hang from a single point.
  • Freestanding pop-up — needs no fixings at all. It springs open to a self-supporting dome in seconds and is floorless, so you can use it almost anywhere. Packs down to 29 inches across and weighs just 2.8 lbs. See the pop-up net.

A quick word on sizing

Bigger is better. It's easy to gather or tuck a little extra netting into the corners, but a net that's too small never works well — so when you're between sizes, size up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between cotton and polyester mosquito nets?

Cotton mosquito nets are woven from natural cotton with 256 holes per square inch — breathable, soft, machine washable, and built to last around a decade with proper care. Polyester mosquito nets are woven finer at 360 holes per square inch — sheer, see-through, lightweight and the most affordable choice. Choose cotton for everyday comfort in warm climates; choose polyester for guest rooms, travel and budget-conscious buyers.

What shapes do mosquito nets come in?

Mosquito nets come in four shapes. Box nets hang from four to six ceiling hooks and create a structured four poster canopy with an opening on each side. Round nets hang from a single ceiling hook in a soft, romantic drape. Temple nets hang from one central hook with three openings and fit almost any bed. Freestanding pop-up nets need no fixings at all — they spring open into a self-supporting dome in seconds.

Do mosquito nets need insecticide to work?

No. A quality mosquito net works as a pure physical barrier — the weave is simply too fine for mosquitoes to pass through. Our nets contain no insecticide, permethrin or chemical treatment of any kind, making them safe for bedrooms, children and anyone sensitive to chemicals. Used properly — correctly sized and sealed around the bed — the netting alone provides complete protection from mosquitoes.

How do you hang a mosquito net without drilling into the ceiling?

Choose a freestanding pop-up mosquito net — it stands independently over the bed with no hooks, no drilling and no installation of any kind. It springs open in seconds and folds flat for storage, making it the ideal choice for renters, apartments, dorms and travel. See our pop up freestanding mosquito net, which fits Double through to King size beds.

Can one mosquito net fit more than one bed size?

Yes — several of our nets are deliberately multi-fit. The Jumbo round net fits Queen, King and California King beds. The temple net fits beds from Twin through to King, plus daybeds. The freestanding pop-up adjusts from Double to King with a toggled drawstring. Box nets are the exception — they're cut to match a specific mattress, so choose the box size that matches your bed.

How many holes per square inch should a mosquito net have?

A mosquito net needs a fine enough weave to exclude the smallest biting mosquitoes. Our cotton nets are woven to 256 holes per square inch and our polyester nets to 360 holes per square inch — both comfortably fine enough to keep mosquitoes out while letting air flow through. Beware very cheap nets with loose or inconsistent weaves; a net with gaps or a coarse weave lets insects in.

Are mosquito nets safe for children?

Yes — our nets are made from non-toxic materials with no insecticide or chemical treatment, so they're safe for children's bedrooms. Many parents choose them as much for the magical canopy effect as the insect protection. Ensure the net is properly installed and sealed. For infants and babies, use our dedicated crib netting range, designed specifically for cots and infant beds.

Why buy directly from a mosquito net specialist instead of Amazon?

We've been designing and making mosquito nets for thirty years, and we've never sold on Amazon — when you buy from us, you buy directly from the specialists who make the product, with real sizing advice and support before and after purchase. Our nets are built to the standard luxury resorts demand, not to a marketplace price point. That's the difference between a net that lasts a decade and one that lasts a season.

Cotton and polyester nets ship free within mainland USA from our North Carolina warehouse, usually dispatched within one to two business days. Our pure silk nets ship from Australia by express courier. We're not on Amazon — you're always buying directly from us.
